Portland to Coast

My partner and I are planning a touring trip from Portland to LA, we are mostly taking the 101 down the coast. We were after any suggestions of how to get from Portland to the coast, so far we found the Salmon Coast Highway (I think that's its name), hitting the coast around Lincoln City.
Is this a good cycling road?
Someone mentioned to us the Reach the Beach ride, although following this route could be difficult as we will be flying to Portland from Australia and probability of us finding a local school near Beaverton to start our ride could prove difficult. Is the route really worth it? the photos look very scenic, however, we would most likely be forced to do this outside of the actual event on the open roads and so following the maps they provide could get interesting.
Anyone have any suggestions? Any must-see towns to visit or attractions?
Thanks so much.

Will you have a rental car or are you just cycling the whole way?

If no car, take the Max from the airport to Beaverton. Cost $2.50 per person. Check a local map, there are several ways to get to the RTB route. As far as scenic, it's as good as most routes to the beach by bike but with far less traffic than the main highways. Least elevations to the coast than other routes from Portland. There is a bypass of the Hwy 18/22 main road than runs parallel to the highway. Once you reach highway 18/22, cross underneath and get on Yamhill River Road. RTB doesn't use it as it requires a left turn onto Yamhill Road that is also an off ramp from the highway. This road follows the river to Gold Creek, Only adds 1-2 miles to the ride but will keep you off the highway. Cross back over the highway and use the on-ramp to join Hwy18/22 for approximately 2 miles to the Hwy 22 turn (Hebo Road). The RTB option will get you to Hwy 101. Once there turn left instead of right toward Lincoln City unless you will be spending the night in Pacific City.

From here, 101 south is beautiful. Hilly in spots with a lot of traffic.

From the airport take the Max Train out to Hillsboro city center. Follow the Harvest Century route into Newburg where you can then join the RTB course to the coast. Routes intersect at Ribbon Ridge Road.
