Allianz Trip Insurance - Heads Up

Last fall (2015), I had to cancel my participation in the Week Long Ride due to a leg injury I sustained in August. Unfortunately, it was too late to get any refund.

This year, because of what happened last year as well as the CO policy that refunds of entry fees will also not be possible if the ride is cancelled for a whole slew of events, I decided to buy the Allianz Trip Insurance for $59.89 which was advertised during the registration process.

I am in the allowed 10-day review period (during which you can still cancel the policy) and I noticed that the policy for the CO event, contained the statement of:
Travel dates: September 10, 2016 - September 10, 2016

This seems to exclude everything except the first day of the ride.

Also, under Part IV, it states:
These exclusions apply to all plan benefits. In addition to
any exclusions that apply to a particular benefit, no
coverage is provided for any loss arising directly or
indirectly out of or as a result of the following:
7. Participation in professional or amateur sport events
(including training);*

*Exclusions 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14 and 15 do not apply to the
Emergency Medical and Dental Benefits and Emergency
Medical Transportation.

This has me concerned about the actual coverage, although that does depend on if an organized bike ride such as CO is considered an "amateur sport events"

I have called Allianz and they promised a specialist would get back to me. I also left a message for CO staff on voicemail, just to give them a heads up on this. I realize that CO is not responsible for the policy, but they should be aware of it as they are providing it as a choice for participants.

At this point, I am not sure if I will cancel this insurance, but I thought others who might have signed up for it or are considering might want to be made aware of these apparent shortcomings. The only caveat I will add is that I am in WA state and the policy that is provided here may be different from that provided to those of you who are residents of other states.

If I find out anything else, I will add it to this thread.

Hello Orest,

I'm wondering if you heard anything from your inquiries about the travel insurance. I also signed up for the insurance. I am in Utah rather than Washington so some aspects may be different. Please post if you have an update. All the best, Alan

The cancellation insurance is good up to the day of the ride. Once you've arrived, the cancelation insurance is no longer needed.
