Rear flashing lights?

Postby Force 5 Robert » Mon Aug 09, 2010 5:13 pm

This coming Sept will be my 4th Cycle Oregon week. Have also now been on 3 CO Weekends. In all of them I have seen varying use of rear flasher lights but mostly only a few.

When riding alone, I always run at least one and often two rear flashers for visibility, even during the day. Seems on Cycle oregon the rear lights are largely unnecessary, but I am not aware what the "official" word is on these or if there even is one. Is it wise to bring my rear lights, or do they just wind up being an annoyance to all the other cyclists?

On my previous CO's, many many times I have found myself riding nearly alone, and wondered in those times if the increase in visibility would be wise.

If you plan on riding before or after sunset, yes bring a light. If you feel safer with the light riding with 2000 of your closest friends, yes bring a light. If you are riding between the 6:30-6:30 time frame, it is well marked and patrolled so you shouldn't need a light. If you are riding something that sits lower to the ground than the standard road bike, you may want the light to help make you more visible.

Hmmm... don't plan on any rides in the dark.... but on a tadpole trike I am a mere 4" off the road... 8)

On the weekend ride we rode the trikes with the flags and lights. I am planning on leaving the flag at home myself for the week trip... I just might leave the lights on though.

As a SAG Driver, I absolutely welcome all those who use a rear light - flashing or not. We spend a lot of the day moving between sun and shade, and in those shady spots, ya'll can be hard to see. A blinker makes you stand out much easier.

Ok - SAG has spoken - I will indeed bring my flashers especially to run during the days of shade. (are there any-?) :)

It's not any added weight since I am already on a trike. Heh...
