Dont think it will rain.

Postby woodenidol » Wed Sep 01, 2010 7:47 am

Well with the rain yesterday and today, I broke down and put on the fenders for the winter commute. Dont think I will bother to remove them for the ride, as they are on for the winter now. So I think I have guaranteed fair weather by leaving them on for the ride.

Think Ill add several spare tubes and tires to guarantee no flats. haha.

Don't get your knickers in a twist yet, but take a look at todays NWS - Pendleton http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pdt/ office forecast for:

Elgin: Isolated T-strms, high 79 F, wind W 14-20 mph, gusts to 30

Clarkston: Sunny, high 84 F wind W 18-21 mph, gusts to 24

Waitsburg: Sunny/Blowing Dust  high 78 F wind W 18-22 mph gusts to 32

(blowing dust in Walla Walla, too)

Pendleton: Yep, Blowing Dust there too, high 80 wind W 22-25 mph, gusts to 36

The trend looks like it could be somewhat cooler, cloudy and chance of showers by the time we start riding. Weather pattern in the Pacific Northwest has turned decidely unsettled in the past week which is a bit unusual for late summer.

Come prepared for anything - not sure what that would be for blowing dust, but I'm thinking facemask and goggles  (kind of like climbing the ashfields on Mt St. Helens?)

Can't be any worse than Mitchell. Remember we could not even tell what color our tents were in the morning!!!
It's always sunny at 35,000 ft

After Mitchell, if I remember correctly, I don't think anybody on the ride had ANY clean clothes. In Sisters, I suggested to Carol that we get up early and get to the Laundramat ahead of the crowd, and get our clothes washed. We did get up early and walked to town. When we got to the Laundramat I think there were about 200 people in line for the machines. After waiting in line for a couple of hours, I went store to store asking if anybody wanted to make a few bucks doing laundry. Got lucky and found a woman who said her mother would like to make a few extra bucks. Came back to town in the afternoon and picked up a bag of clean, dry, folded clothes. I think I paid her $10 or $15 and it was worth every cent.

weather.com has ten day forecasts for Enterprise and Clarkston that have me digging out the fenders: CHANCE of showers for a few days next week.

Walking around Portland tells me autumn is coming in strong. Better safe than sorry.

I keep looking at the 10 day and wondering. It is looking pretty clear, but you never know. I am still on the fence about installing my fenders, as that means once they are on they have to stay on the entire ride. Ugh. Maybe I could run a rear fender... still undecided.

I checked weather.com for every location and it looks pretty good - not even as cold as I was expecting. The only day with showers in the forecast is Sept. 18, the last day from Pendleton to Elgin. Not a good day for rain! I hope the forecast changes. Guess I will pack the rain gear "just in case" but hope for dry weather. Happy packing, everyone!

Yee-ha, the NWS forecast, too, is looking better and better for the beginning of the week! And usually reasonably reliable once we're getting this close. Anything more than a few days out is a WAG, for sure

Elgin - mostly sunny, high 75 Sat, overnight low 33, so bring your warmies!
Enterprise - mostly sunny high 69, Sun, overnight low 39. Sure beats their weather today! (scattered showers, high 56)
Lewiston - mostly sunny, high 81 (woo-hoo! )Monday, overnight low 54
Etc, etc.

BUT, it definitely pays to be prepared for a variety of conditions. If the weather looks variable, don't get rid of all your extra layers at the first gear drop!

So it didn't rain great buckets, but my rain coat was welcome that one morning. Waitsburg to Pendleton? Am I remembering correctly?
