I just watched a program night before last on the Modoc War in 1872-73. It was very fascinating, Captain Jack gave the U.S. Cavalry a very tough time. They held up in the giant lava beds in the very NE corner California.

That got me thinking how close Mt Ashland is to that area. Mt Ashland is 7532 ft Medford is 1,382 ft that's a 6150 ft climb in 27 miles. It's an unusual ski area because the parking lot and lodge are at the top of the mountain.

The road used to be gravel, but they are expanding the ski area so they have paved it. Cycle Oregon hasn't used it because it was a dirt road. I don't know about the no backtracking clause, but a 6150 ft climb is pretty serious business particularly because you don't start climbing until Ashland and that's just 18 miles away. There are some very nice secondary roads (the Green Springs Hwy) on the way up there.

The improvements to Mt Ashland are just the type of thing that Cycle Oregon would be inclined to highlight to 2200 potential skiiers. Besides who wouldn't want to spend a layover day in Ashland, University of Southern Oregon, Shakespare, good stuff.

When I was in college in the 70's I used to ride my Motobecane Grand Record up to the parking lot @ Ashland. I would the stop @ Callahans and eat a plate of Spaghetti. Load up on carbs and head back to my house on Siskiyou Blvd. Great ride. It would be awesome to do it again. I vote it as part of the ride. Lets keep the thoughts going. Where else, Over to K-falls and then toward Paisley.

"A final word of advice: You're going to want to train for next year's 25th Anniversary Ride... trust me on this." Start right now!

This is the last sentence of yesterdays newletter from CO. Take warning! It promises to be fun!

Sounds like 3 possibilities for the "high point" of next year's ride-

1. Crater Lake rim road: CO has "been there, done that" several times so this seems unlikely but not impossible.
2. Mt. Ashland access road: 6000' of climbing over ~30 miles from downtown Ashland. Great layover day in Ashland, if that is the out-and-back route. The descent would be INSANE. Of course it would be even more INSANE to camp at the top. Not sure there is enough flat ground up there to support 2000+ riders.
3. Steens Mountain Road: Is it paved? If so, could get up to 6000' of climbing to the top.

Crater Lake and Mt. Ashland are close enough to have them in the same week ride. I'll have to put together my perfect Central/Southern Oregon week-long route.

2012 registration will be online only, beginning at 9 pm PST February 7, following the Kickoff Party. Thats only 4 weeks from next Tuesday.

How is the above announcement going to affectt the Kick Off Party attendance? It seems that if you go to the Kick Off Party you will not be able to register until you get home unless you bring your laptop/tablet and try to make a connection from the Party site. Hopefully we will learn more when the next Newsletter comes out.
