Steens here we come!!!!!

Postby David R » Thu Feb 07, 2013 2:42 pm

I hope either CO or some enterprising person provides us with transportation to the top of Steens Mountain(Fee based extra would be fine) The whole trip will be worth that one picture.

Ever since I stated riding CO some 11 years ago I have been waiting for this route. Looking forward to going some where that my bike has never been.

CO will no doubt make available ( for a fee I suspect ) transportation to and from the Steens. They did on September 12th 2001. And I suspect they will do it this year as well.

I can say that the bus ride will be far less somber than it was in '01.

My first reaction to this location was um... Seems. Little blah... But then I checked out images of John day on google, so cool! Looking forward to the Asian medical center and the painted hills, just lovely and a little otherworldly.

If I recall correctly, in 2001 they packed you into a school bus for a very bumpy ride to the top. There was no fee for that...it was just part of the ride. It is very easy in the NW to ride in dense tree cover but I don't think it gets much better than riding in the wide open and that is what makes this ride so great.

I don't know if they will do the school bus up the Steens as in 2001 they had some bus breakdowns.Schoolbuses and dirt roads didn't mix well in a few cases. My bus only made it halfway.

I guess I was fortunate to get all the way to the top the mountain then.

But then again we were chased off the mountain by the T-storms and high winds that were later to plague camp that night and make our entertainment Cycle Oregon unplugged.

It's a dirt road, but it can be ridden.

Guessing that buses will be provided for a fee organized by the community or a local organization. The road to the top is not paved or was not 12 years ago and is a washboard surface. The view from the top is suppose to be similar to the Grand Canyon.
