The Pitch...

Postby joec » Sat Feb 08, 2014 6:51 am

Did anyone get the ratio Steve mentioned in the kickoff for the steepest bit we'll climb this week? Was it 1 foot traveled for every 8 feet climbed? OK Math brains what's the pitch (slope)?

For every up there's a down... 8)

You're overthinking it. Pitch is just rise over run, so 1 over 8 is a 12.5% grade.

Aww, they changed the thread subject line...

1 foot elevation gain for every 8 feet forward. 12.5 is correct slope for that. I've ridden this a dozen or so times. It is a fun one with a cattle guard near the top! Ride with GPS has it as an average of 11% for 1.2 miles. I'd say that is a good bet. Use to be a sign warning of a 15 or 17% downgrade if my memory serves.

The profiles show this little bump at 14.5%.

Once upon a time there was a 22% hill!! The year CO did State of Jefferson we had a short 22% grade. It was on a private road somewhere between Happy Camp, CA and Lake Selmac, OR. Beautiful ride. Steep ass short hill. Also that year we climbed a forest road with drumming at the unseen top of a long hill. We could not see the top of the hill but we knew we could hear the top of the hill.

Not as steep this year, but longer climb on the steep section.

I loved that little kicker on the Happy Camp -> Selmac segment. Felt a little like mountain biking for a bit. :-)
