Day 3 - 103 Mile Option Elevation Gain

Is the added elevation gain for the 46 mile option on day 3 really an additional 3200 feet?
The route follows the river from Oxbow to the Hells Canyon Dam and the route profile looks pretty flat. Unless it's the death by a thousand paper cuts kind of thing....

There is a 175 foot accent just after we leave Copperfield. Between mile 15 and 16.75 there is a 550 foot accent. The remaining elevation gain is, as you say, "death by a thousand paper cuts."

I rode out to the dam and back to Halfway in 1999, I believe. There's nothing flat about it. Up and down all the way as I recall. And mostly uphill into Halfway.

Do it. It's a great ride.
But you must get up and hit the road out of Cambridge early enough to make the option. The canyon is open and wide for about 10 miles and then the cliffs on either side start to close in. The geology is cool, the scenery is great, there's an old CCC trail cut into the canyon walls, and the end of the road is the raft and jet boat put-in where you can float (or ride) 80 miles, and pass the confluence of the Salmon River, all the way to Asotin WA.

My job takes me to Hells Canyon many times a year. For almost 40 years. It's a new experience every time. Don't miss it.

It is a beautiful side trip.

The extension is undulating terrain. Looking at the map from the 2008 ride, where this was an optional day from Halfway, there were lots of ~100 foot rollers from Copperfield on. About 5 miles from the dam is a ~500' hill that you get over twice. So it's plausible that it adds up.
