Mary's Peak Road

Not an official or organized ride. In fact, yesterday almost completely deserted.

The Forest Service has had the paved road (30) from highway 34 closed since May. Auto access to the top is only available via a 13 mile gravel road from Harlan, which itself is a slow but paved 10 miles from the store at Burnt Woods on state Hwy 20. This keeps out most cars.

However, on weekends, bicycles are permitted on the 5 mile closed section of Mary's Peak Road from Hwy 34 and the parking area there is open. Don't try it during the week, you will be turned away. Yesterday, there was one gravelled section of about 100 yards that was quite ridable for road bikes. There is some sand, gravel and debris in other places on the road, so watch your speed on the downhill. But no cars, which makes it a great ride! - starts about 1300 ft at Hwy 34, tops out about 4000 near the top in only about 10 miles. You can hike the rest of the way to the top at 4,097 ft for incredible views from the Cascades to the coast.
