Harvest Century. Saturday Oct 10th

Postby Brian C » Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:31 am

The last organized century of the season in the greater Portland Metro region goes off from a new starting location, The Hillsboro/Washington County Fair Grounds, in Hillsboro, OR.

http://www.harvestcentury.org/

This is a change from the previous 6 years when it started at Champoeg Park.
Routes of 100, 75 and 45 miles as well as a 3-mile family route.

The century basically follows the same route as when it started from Champoeg park only flip the course over, so to speak.

Climbing occurs out by Forest Grove at the beginning of the course this year, then out to Newberg and some rollers and such along the way, over to the farmlands South of Newberg, past Champoeg Park and cross the river on the Canby Ferry. This is the hardest climb on the course. Get off the ferry and climb for 0.5 miles at about 15+ percent. This guy is steep, have your small gears ready while you are on the Ferry.

The return to Hillsboro following basically the same course as in the past through Wilsonville, Sherwood and the farmroads South of Hillsboro.

This is a nice course that takes you through a mix of urban and rural environments. 4 rest stops along the way with food and fuel/water, etc...

A nice way to end your Event Ride 2009 cycling season.

I'll be there for my 4th.
Good Riding

Huge crowds turned out for this season ending century. Organizers estimated around 1000 riders.

A nice mass started greated us early risers/starters at 7:10AM on this cold morning of 36 or so degress as the flag went down and we all started off under the escort of the Hillsboro Police Department directing traffic on the busy intersections.

The sun came out around mile 6 or so after riding through early morning fog througout the neighborhoods but even with the sun, it was a cold ride throughout.

All the rests stops had big crowds and the sandwiches and pasta salad at Ewing Young Elementary School was a nice change from standard rest stop food.

Crossing at the Canby Ferry was limited to 15 to 20 riders at a time so this had cyclists lined up with the cars as the ferry shuttled people back and forth.

Coming home from rest stop 4 to the finish there were countless riders strung out along Roy Rodgers Road, Farmington, Minter Bridge and the remaining roads back to the fairgrounds. This was one popular ride and it brought an end to the 2009 Event Cycling season with lots of flair.

Until next year enjoy your winter riding or however else you stay in shape and as always be safe.
Good Riding

We did the 45 mile route on our tandem. Very well run event; the course was well marked and the route was nice. Even wine tasting at the second rest stop, with purchases shuttled to the finish line. Sorry 75 and 100 milers, it was just after the routes split  .
