2009 Cycle Oregon, where we going?

Talk in camp was about a recently paved road outside of Medford, not sure in what direction. Can't see Washington, unless it's somewhere out of the Portland Metro area, which would put us either out towards the coast (the weekend ride was just there) or out towards Walla Walla (we just came from that part of the state). Possibly a dip into N. California on the coast?

My guess is somewhere in SW Oregon with one night along the coast (central/southern) area.

The entire coast is too windy and crowded for 2000 riders. Think Cove, Powers or Bandon.

All just guesses since we haven't been to any of these towns.

Certainly by now, someone must have mapped out all of the rides on one map and noticed some gaps? :D

Cheers

Next ODS rest stop sign

Postby Pace » Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:03 pm

Anyone take note of the final "Next ODS rest stop sign" just before the finish in Elgin? I think it said 197 miles but am not positive. I have always assumed the last sign was a clue to the next route but have never confirmed.

Where are we going in 2009

Missed that sign, probably distracted about being on the last day and having to return to reality shortly.

Anyone else see it?

I saw the last sign too, but it read "Next ODS stop 293 miles"...that would put us down around Lakeview, south Oregon, near the California/Nevada border. A loop into Nevada (Sheldon wildlife reserve) could be a possibility.

Has CO been in Nevada before??

Wasn't CO 21 an epic adventure!!!???

The rest stop sign in Elgin to which you are referring said, "ODS Rest Stop / 279 miles ahead / in your bed!!!" Probably a reference to returning to Portland -- at least, being from Portland, that's how I interpreted it.

There were several signs posted on the last day. Most were in appreciation of the excellent job the sign team did signing the course each day. These were made up by some of the CO staff as a thank you.

Yes, looking at last year's map (20th anniv) there's a big gap east of La Pine and Crater Lake. My guess is that 2009 route could be something like: La Pine, Summer Lake, Paisley, Riley and be pretty new territory for CO.

best,

I'm experiencing my usual post-CO return to reality, and already looking forward to the next kick-off party. For the past few years, if someone was at the registration table early during the reception, I'd sign up before the route was even announced. I already know I'm going, it's in the budget and it's my Fall vacation.

Can't wait for the next one. This year was fantastic.

I would take a guess that it may involve the Redwood Hwy from Grants Pass to Crescent City or the Klamath River Hwy into the Happy Camp region. Lots of great backroads in those regions and between those highways (LOTS of hills). Hey, it's not California, it's VERY Southern Oregon!

I am from Superior California and we call that territory the "State of Jefferson" It is certainly beautiful and remote. Down the Klamath & Salmon Rivers is totally another culture and another century.

Sept should be less hot.

For the last 3 years there has been severe forest fires in the SisQ;s Marbles and Trinity Alps. Air quality this year would have been poor.

It would be fun but I do not think they will should chance the recent forest fire problems.

My hubby came along as rider guest and he really enjoyed himself. I think even if I didn't really want to ride, he wouldn't want to miss it! It was a great ride, and rider guests were well cared for too. So, I better start training now!! Something tells me next year will be a bit more of a challenge.
