Day 2 Rattlesnake Pass

Postby wayneh » Thu Feb 25, 2010 1:18 pm

Some pictures I found on the internet of Joseph Canyon and Rattlesnake Pass. Apparently this route is tops with the motorcycle crowd and quite highly regarded. I can see why.

Looks awesome, but not in the heat of the afternoon I would guess. 8)

Best get an early start then, eh? 8)

Just looking at these pics make me glad I'm going- it is beautiful! I don't imagine the hillside will be quite so green in September. How many miles into the days ride is Rattlesnake Pass?

It's Day 2. We leave Enterprise and head north, through Flora. It's about 40 miles to the border, and then around another 10 miles or so into Washington, by the looks of the map. I expect the spring green will be late summer brown by the time we get there, though.

The climb looks to be about 8 or 10 miles and 2500 feer. Not too bad and very [retty.

Yes sadly it won't be a pretty green but it will be quiet and a nice steady even if long climb. Those are the best ones.

At 8 miles it would be an average of 5.9%. At 10 miles the average would be 4.7%

MapMyRide computes this segment with a couple short intervals at 6%, and most of the ascent at 4 and 5%. The 8% grade doesn't come until Day 3, the Clarkston to Waitsburg segment - that surprised me - it's a very short section. I'm considering the stairs. :D

I liked this day, great views, nice downhills and lunch by the river, excellent! OK, then there were the two climbs, but we finished with an awesome downhill to the nice bike path. What a great day! Oh yeah, and the totally hot babe singer in the band that night in Clarkston made me forget the pain in my legs! More beer!
Clip in and let's go!

That really was a classic Cycle Oregon Day! Great views, great climbs and descents, and a wonderful riverside roll-in to camp at a congenial location. The band was great, the JV football game was even fun. This may not have been the best Cycle Oregon year ever, but this is one of the best days of the trips I've been on with them.

Well, I must agree that this certainly was an epic CO day, but the second climb up Rattlesnake kicked my butt. I managed to recharge at lunch and really enjoyed the long downhill run into Clarkston, with a young gal in tow the whole way in. A little extra male ego must have kicked in! We rode the bike path in together and shared a nice chat.
